Smyrna, located in northwest Rutherford County in Tennessee, has approximately 30,000 residents. It began as an agricultural community, but like most towns, better means of transportation brought different economic opportunities to the region. Located along or near major highways, railroad lines and airports, Smyrna is easily accessible from many nearby cities.

During the mid-1800s, crops such as corn, cotton and tobacco were grown on the farms and plantations surrounding Smyrna and then transported out of the area by railroad. The United States Army established a military base near Smyrna during World War II and this installation provided economic stability to many residents until its closure in 1970. Smyrna’s economy prospered again when Nissan built a manufacturing plant near the town. Today, more than 6,000 workers are employed at this plant. Other industries currently operating factories or offices in Smyrna include Cumberland Swan and Better Built Aluminum.

Smyrna also offers residents many recreational opportunities including camping, fishing and various water sports. Residents can enjoy these activities at J. Percy Priest Lake, Smith Springs Creek and other area parks. For history buffs, Smyrna also has several historic sites including the Sam Davis Home. Formerly the home of a Confederate scout who was hanged for refusing to reveal information to Union forces, the Sam Davis Home is a 168-acre estate preserved as a 19th-Century working plantation.
