Murfreesboro, the county seat of Rutherford County, has a population of more than 75,000 residents. The downtown area of this historic town has experienced a rebirth with specialty shops and other businesses moving into the city’s Public Square. The Main Street Program, a non-profit group created to revitalize the downtown area, has worked to preserve such commercial buildings and residential neighborhoods in the downtown area as the Rutherford County Courthouse and East Main Street Historic District.

Murfreesboro was chosen by Money Magazine in 2006 as one of its top 100 best small cities to live. As the only Tennessee city to make the list, Murfreesboro was graded on economical, educational and cultural features as well as other quality of life factors.

Murfreesboro is also an educational center with Middle Tennessee State University leading the way. Many of the university’s 22,000 students use the newest technologies and equipment. The aerospace and recording industry departments, in particular, draw students from all over the world. Other accredited institutions in the area include Tennessee Technology Center, Vanderbilt University and Motlow State Community College.

With a past beginning long before the Civil War, Murfreesboro has more than a few historic sites. Stones River National Battlefield and Fortress Rosecrans are located near the city, and the Oaklands Historic House and Bradley Academy Heritage museums provide a glimpse into Murfreesboro’s rich history and culture.
